How Do I Change a Tire?

Flat tires happen, and it’s important to know how to change a tire so you can get back out on the road. Here are some simple steps you can take to get your vehicle running again.

o   Get to Safety: The number one thing to do first is to get yourself to safety, and your vehicle, if possible. Move away from traffic and try to park on a flat surface.

o   Chock the Wheels: To ensure your vehicle doesn’t move, activate the emergency brake and chock the wheels if you can.

o   Loosen the Lug Nuts: Some vehicles have a hubcap or tire cover. Remove the cover and loosen the lug nuts, but don’t remove them completely.

o   Jack the Car: Use your car’s manual to determine the best location for the jack and then raise the car about six inches off the ground.

o   Remove the Tire: Remove the lug nuts and put them into a safe location. Then swap the old tire for the spare and put the lug nuts back into place. Tighten them by hand, but not all the way.

o   Lower the Vehicle: Lower the car until the tire is touching the ground, but the weight is still on the jack. Tighten the lug nuts the rest of the way with your wrench.

o   Remove the Jack: Lower your Ford vehicle the rest of the way and return your tools and manual to their proper places.
